Hungry Mother State Park
One of the crown jewels of the Virigina park system, Hungry Mother State Park has plenty of activities for a day trip or an overnight stay. One of the original six Virigina State Parks, Hungry Mother has long been a favorite. It’s known for beautiful woodlands and a placid 108-acre lake in the hear of the mountains. The park has a sandy beach with a bathhouse, boat rentals (canoe, kayak, paddleboats, and paddleboards), a boat launch and a universally accessible fishing pier. The park offers plenty of hiking trails, ranging from leisurely strolls around the lake, to more challenging hikes. The hike up to Molly’s Knob is one of the more strenuous routes, but absolutely worth it, for the sweeping view of the mountains.
Don’t’ forget to try your luck at hunting fairy stones. Staurolite crystals (aka ‘fairy stones’) are naturally occurring crystals found only in a few places on earth. Fairy Stone State Park is one of those special places
